Friday 1st October 2010 at 19:30 - Henry Olonga Comes to Lechlade
October 1st 2010 in the Memorial Hall, Lechlade at 7.30pm.
Cricket fans everywhere will know that Henry was the first black player and the youngest to play international cricket for Zimbabwe. Some may remember that he and Andy Flower (now cricket coach to the England team) achieved international recognition in 2003 by wearing a black armband in a World Cup match to protest against the policies of Zimbabwe’s government. This act led to a warrant issued in Zimbabwe for Olonga’s arrest on charges of treason. As a result he had to retire from international cricket and leave the country.
Henry now pursues a career using his superb tenor voice singing as a solo artist and also taking leading roles in productions such as the Gondoliers, Annie Get Your Gun and Joseph and his Technicolor Dream-coat. He has made many recordings including a full contemporary pop album with one of the UK’s top producers, Robbie Bronnimann.
On this evening he will sing and answer questions as well as share something regarding his faith. The evening has been arranged by the Baptist Church and tickets are on sale at £5. These may be obtained from Don Gillard 01367 253738 or any member of the Baptist Church.
